Two EMT's, one with 15 +years of experience and one who just started the job share their experiences with RPHS HOSA members. We were able to get an exclusive tour inside the ambulance as the EMT's described their daily routine and immediate care towards patients.
Life of an EMT
Throughout their storytelling we learned that the schedule of an EMT is inconsistent and requires a lot of ambition for the job at hand.
Here's what we learned!
EMT's are Emergency Medical Technicians which means they are only able to perform non-invasive life support techniques.
One EMT that visited RPHS HOSA was an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic meaning they are one step below an Intermediate and two below a Paramedic. We learned that EMT-B's are still first responders at car accidents and fires.
The other EMT was an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate meaning he is able to take IV's and monitor EKGs.
To become an EMT students must take an Anatomy and Physiology course as well as attend a training camp. Minimum requirements for an EMT-B is 2-year Associates degree training before becoming an EMT-P.
The EMT's share their experiences
The shifts as an EMT include 24 hour shifts allowing for them to take some days off.
The EMT with 15 years of experience talks about his most traumatic experinece as an EMT being a woman dying of a heart attack and not being able to save her.
